Tyler Sabbag
Emmy winning, California-based composer and video artist Tyler Sabbag creates audio and multimedia works seeking to spotlight beauty, love, and intellectual playfulness. His work includes music for film, music for contemplative listening, and music for dancing, as well as short films pairing miracles of Planet Earth with original musical compositions.
Sabbag was born in northern California in 1983 and grew up in a small town known for its sky scraping redwood trees and 1960’s ethos. Beginning his musical journey on the drums as a young child, he would go on to study with noteworthy jazz dignitary Omar Clay before moving to Los Angeles to attend the University of Southern California’s Flora L. Thornton School of Music in 2002, where he would continue his education with luminaries Ndugu Chancler, Terri Lyne Carrington, and Alan Pasqua.
From 2005-2012, Sabbag composed and performed with the wild-yet-influential art-pop band Pizza!, a fixture in the Los Angeles underground music scene, while learning his trade behind the mixing console in studios from East LA to the San Fernando Valley. In 2014, Sabbag joined longtime collaborator and former Pizza! bandmate Duncan Thum in creating music for film, and their collaborative efforts were quickly rewarded with back-to-back Emmy Award nominations for their work on the renowned Netflix documentary series, Chef’s Table.
Sabbag presently remains deeply involved in creating music for film while maintaining a vibrant composition and studio practice outside the margins of scoring. His VHS Observations multimedia works combine his love of the Earth with original music that seeks to expand his composition techniques in the name of beauty. His forthcoming collection of compositions Neptunalia is an adventurous and wide-ranging group of short musical works combining advanced composition techniques with rich, elaborate soundscapes and playful pop sensibilities, and is set to be released in early 2022.
